Suggested Session Topics

PACAC leaders, 2009 Conference Attendees, and the Sessions Committee would love to see some sessions that explore the following topics at this year’s conference. If a particular area appeals or applies to you, please consider submitting a session proposal.

 

 

Technology

                -We’d love to hear from people who have “chartered the waters” of technology

                -We’d like to see a session on more than just Facebook (also include Twitter, etc.)

-With creating a Facebook generation, how do we instill the skills of face-to-face communication? What is lost?

 

Economy

                -Budgeting within your office

-“What is budgeting and how do you work with it?”

                -An explanation on the movement to direct lending

                - TIAA-CREF session- consultations and what to do in this economy

 

Veterans

                -The new GI Bill

                -Veteran focused recruitment

 

Secondary School Counseling

-Counseling to Specific Majors (arts, music, etc)

-Helping first generation college students

-Counseling students with learning disabilities

 

Athletics

                -Beyond just one division

 

Equal access

-Is it an attainable goal? Potential to debate and discuss the issues and challenges.

 

Switching Sides or Offices

-What to prepare for when switching from Secondary School Counseling to Admissions or vice versa

-What to prepare for when going to a different office in the same profession

 

Community College

-Student session

-Myths vs. facts

-Partnerships

-How to “Gain Your Corner of the Market” as a 2 year institution

 

PACAC and NACAC

 -What’s it all mean; how do you get involved? What are all of the different committees?

-Updates to Best Practices

-Updates to the NACAC Knowledge Center

-Summer Institute and the Summer Summit -What are they?

 

International students

-How to deal with undocumented students

-How to deal with fabricated documents

-How it works from secondary schools and in college admissions

 

Testing

-New score choice policies

-International student admission tests (i.e. TOEFL)

-How to de-emphasize standardized testing’s place in admissions

-SAT optional

-How standardized tests (SAT, ACT, AP, IB, SAT II) are used at a variety of PA schools

 

Data

-How it’s collected and used;

-What is benchmarking and how is it done

-What exactly is collected?

 

Do’s and Don’t of the High School Visit

-Have a Dean/Director and an SSC list what’s expected and what actually happens

 

Common App/Universal App

 

User group roundtables

-Secondary School Counselors that use Naviance/PrepHQ and how they like it

 

Book club session

-Have people read a book before the conference and them come and discuss
